Tony's Chocolonely Ethical Chocolate is Coming to New Zealand

With their 100% ethical chocolate mission, joyful branding and symbolically uneven shaped pieces as well as their amazing flavours such as Milk chocolate caramel sea salt, Dark chocolate almond sea salt and White chocolate raspberry popping candy, it's little wonder Tony’s Chocolonely has become the #1 selling chocolate bar in the Netherlands.

When Tony’s Chocolonely founder, Dutch investigative journalist Teun van de Keuken (Tony in English) discovered the extent of inequality and child labour in the cocoa industry, he was shocked. He tried to discuss the problem with the large chocolate makers, but they ignored him. So he took action, and made 5,000 Fairtrade chocolate bars himself.

And so Tony’s Chocolonely was born, with a name reffering to Tony’s lonely fight against inequality in the chocolate industry. Since 2005, they've been leading by example by building direct long-term relationships with cocoa farmers in Ghana and Ivory Coast, paying them a higher price and working together to solve the underlying causes of unethical treatment and illegal child labour while still producing delicious, chocolate. It's little wonder they've been voted one of the most trusted brands in the world.

Now for the first time, thanks to the clever team at Cook & Nelson, we can get our hands on some Tony’s chocolate goodness right here in New Zealand. It will taste just that little but sweeter knowing you’re consuming a bar of excellent Belgian goodness that exists to make chocolate 100% ethical - not just their own chocolate, but all chocolate worldwide.

The B-Corp (Benefit Corporation) certified company, which has become the bestselling chocolate brand in the Netherlands, has launched six 180g bars, two of which are dairy free: Milk chocolate 32%, Extra dark chocolate 70% (DF), Milk chocolate caramel sea salt 32%, Dark chocolate almond sea salt 51% (DF), Milk chocolate hazelnut 32% & White chocolate raspberry popping candy 28%.

You will recognize them on the shelves from the colorful wrappers that explode off the shelf, to the chunky unequally divided chocolate bars within, to reflect the social inequality of the chocolate industry. Tony’s Chocolonely Fairtrade bars spread its message in its purest form: things can be done differently.

Tony’s Chocolonely can be found in all good New World supermarkets and leading independent retailers nationwide including Farro Fresh in Auckland and online at www.cookandnelson.com. RRP for the 180g bar is $7.99.
