Fix & Fogg's Newmarket Hole in the Wall is as Unfussy and Nostalgic as Peanut Butter on Toast

Fix & Fogg are known for their peanut butter, but they also have a hole in the wall that serves toast in Wellington. Now that one has opened in Auckland, we went and had a look at what it is all about (spoiler alert: it's about peanut butter).

'Ooh, A Peanut Butter Emporium!' mused a passing punter as I stood waiting for my toasties. Random, insightful man, I don't know where you got that from but you couldn't have hit the nail more squarely on the head in describing Fix & Fogg's new Newmarket sandwich window.

Though their menu is brief (just five sandwiches and three beverages long), each item has been well thought out and the toast options are all surprisingly substantial - the toasts are large, thick and filling with a generous helping of topping. The breakfast banoffee, for example, is loaded with banana, agave syrup, sunflower and pumpkin seeds and cinnamon, the combinations fresh but decadent, then it's all layered on a piece of pillowy soft country sourdough from Fort Greene.

All their toast is taken very seriously: their gluten free option is a Sprouted Quinoa Loaf from Daily Bread. Their 'Stay Toastie' is made with Smoked Rye Sourdough (also from Daily Bread) that enhances the Smoke & Fire peanut butter and tangy pickles within. Plus, it's all vegetarian and can be made vegan on request.

Of course, to wash down your toast, they have Supreme coffee - filter only!

I can't name another place where a peanut-butter fan could be so well served. They also sell all 11 of Fix & Fogg's nut butters, from crunchy, to smooth, to cashew, almond, granola to coffee & maple and more. If you're looking for a present for a friend who is nuts about nuts, this is a one-stop shop.

The rustic, shed-like decor of the little store front (the original home of the now-adjacent Camper Coffee) combined with the smell of toast feels cosy and nostalgic. The few seats are neat little outdoor perches that are perfect for coffee and toast for two. It's casual and unfussy - much like peanut butter on toast.
