Tonight's Dessert – Miann, Auckland
Photography by India Essuah.
New dessert restaurant Miann will have you feeling like a kid in the most beautiful of candy stores.
Place: As of this week, between two Fort Street favourites, Beirut and Ima Restaurant in Auckland City is Miann, a dessert bar and patisserie offering the most incredible desserts from dawn until dusk. Serving up pastries in the morning and gelato and desserts from their cabinet as well as breakfast and tasting menus, it's an unmissable spot for those with a sweet tooth.
People: Miann has been opened by the immensely talented pastry chef Brian Campbell and his wife Roselle. After working in Michelin-Starred restaurants overseas and then in New Zealand at the likes of The French Cafe, Bracu and Kermadec, Brian ran Britomart's Milse, before running a series of pop-up dessert bars as Sweet Cuisine.
On the menu: Starting with pastries, doughnuts – and soon, a dessert breakfast menu – in the mornings, Miann offers a stunning cabinet filled with eclairs, chocolates, gateaux and gelato throughout the day, as well as an á la carte and tasting menu in the evenings. The flavours are as innovative as the presentation; the staff were more than happy to walk us through the complexities of each dish. Just by looking, it's impossible to guess what hides inside each dessert and each combination of chocolate, fruit, nuts and gelato is more suprising than the last.
Decor: Miann's dim lighting and moody lighting makes the experience even more theatrical. It's an intimate space decorated simply, letting what's on your plate take the limelight. It's hard to tear your eyes away from what's going on backstage too – you'll spot Miann's team of pastry chefs working their magic just behind the counter.
Go tomorrow: For the sweetest breakfast or the most delecatble selection of desserts in town. It's not the sort of place you visit as an afterthought once dinner's over though – make sure you have enough of an appetite to make dessert the main course.
