Drop of the Day - Zephyr Gewürztraminer 2019
Today's Drop of the Day was recently awarded Supreme Champion Wine at the 2020 NZ Aromatic Wine Competition. With a textural and succulent palate, it might just be the perfect wine for cheese platters. We'd match the Zephyr Gewürztraminer with Gocce Blue Cheese and Honey Roasted Pears.
Many wines match well with cheese, but finding a wine that really sets off the flavours of your favourite blue, and also shines in its own right in return is a little more difficult. That said, we think we've found the perfect wine to pair with a cheese platter.
If you aren't familiar with gewürztraminer, it's an aromatic grape varietal that is originally from Alsace, France, and tends to thrive in cooler climates. Tastewise, it's classically on the sweeter side, often with a bitter finish and high alcohol content.
However, this gewürztraminer from Zephyr's family owned Dillons Point Vineyard is a less heavy, fresher tasting style, with only 5 grams of residual sugar which balances the richness of cheese nicely.
You might note a hint of ginger, blossom and petals on the nose and a textural, unctuous and succulent palate - and that aromatic nature also makes this wine a gorgeous match for cheese, though we love the idea of pairing it with Gocce Blue Cheese and Honey Roasted Pears too.
Winemaker Ben Glover describes this wine as “on the edge and definitely a wine that can work the room and be comfortable in its own fashion garments.”
Next time you're picking out cheese, grab a bottle of Zephyr Gewürztraminer 2019 and taste why we recommend it as this sunny season's perfect match for a cheeseboard.
