Last Night's Dinner – Fish Fish, Auckland

A new fish and chip shop with a menu that spans effortlessly from ceviche to chip butty.

With a string of grey days signalling how close autumn is, I've started hunting for ways to savour hints of summer year-round. So far, techniques such as looping a three-hour video of a tropical beach on my desktop or sprinkling sand around my desk haven't worked as well as a trip to Ponsonby's newest fish and chip shop, Fish Fish.

Offering fish fresh from the Auckland Fish Market and Yellow Brick Road, Fish Fish's menu features the classics you'd expect, as well as pasta dishes and ceviche alongside vegetarian options and fresh salads. With a focus on ethical fishing methods, their menu changes daily depending on what's freshest – when we visited there was tarakihi and snapper available. You can choose to have your fish panfried, beer battered or panko-crumbed. My friend had hers beer-battered while I went for the burger (their buns come from their sister restaurant/next-door neighbour Burger Burger), which came piled high with crispy fish and drizzled with just the right amount of tartare sauce. 

We couldn't try the fish without ordering a side of their thick-cut "Chippies" – my friend also went for their ingeniously simple Chip Butty: fries sandwiched between two slices of thick, soft white bread. While this looked delicious, an even tastier option is their ceviche, which at the moment is being served with a refreshing combination of Granny Smith apple, coconut milk, chilli, lime and coriander. For good measure, we also tried their fresh and simple heirloom tomato salad... There was barely any space left on the table (or in our stomachs) at this point.

With their refreshing house-made sodas (the chilli and pineapple was delicious) and a blackboard filled with rotating specials, Fish Fish is bound to keep Aucklanders happy with a taste of summer all year round. They offer fresh fish to take home and cook yourself and their dishes are available to takeaway, wrapped up in beautifully illustrated paper, to enjoy at the beach – at least until the cold weather really kicks in.
