Tomorrow's Brunch - Coffee Supreme, Christchurch
Coffee Supreme has found a new Christchurch home and it's got a lot more to offer than just a caffeine fix...
Place: The triumphant return of Coffee Supreme to its own premises in the Christchurch CBD. While you could find their exceptional coffee in other cafés around town, they haven’t had a place to call home since the 2011 earthquake. Now, in their lovingly restored building on Welles Street, you'll find their workshop, training facilities and their newest café: Coffee Supreme.
People: Coffee Supreme are long time players in the coffee game. With over 21 years' experience under their belts, the art of roasting and blending coffee is one they have down to a tee. On top of coffee distribution, they also run their own cafés in Auckland, Wellington (where it all began), Melbourne and now Christchurch has rejoined the crew.
On the menu: For breakfast, it's hard to go past the scrambled eggs (which are silky but perfectly firm) served with hot smoked salmon and toast with housemade butter. For lunch, the Jerk Chicken with Iceberg Wedge, Salsa and Lemon Mayo is a strong contender, as is the Skirt Steak Burger - cooked to perfection and featuring plenty of pickles - with Shoestring Fries and Salad.
Of course, the coffee is excellent - but the drinks list is so good it may tempt you in a different direction. It features tea by locally-based Nobel & Savage, Six Barrel Soda, Master Milk Shakes (including Apple Pie and Earl Grey flavours), as well as daily pressed juices and smoothies like berry and rosewater and mango, pineapple and coconut.
If you're on the run, the takeaway menu features breakfast options like granola and yoghurt and a short but excellent sandwich menu. There's also a baked goods counter laden with treats (the marshmallow whoopie pie is divine) and housemade preserves.
Decor: Light and bright with slick oak, clean white and pops of red. The decor also pays homage to the building's former lives: originally the first Land Rover dealership in Christchurch, Land Rover colours and even the odd 'ding' in the metalwork nod politely to the past. More recently the building housed Hop Yick Chinese Supermarket, and the original signage - which translates to ‘Good Food Together’ - has been retained. The supermarket was famed for being the best place in town to buy fireworks, and to honour that they’re inviting the supermarket owners to sell fireworks from Coffee Supreme annually around Guy Fawkes Day!
Go tomorrow: For breakfast, brunch, lunch and anything in between. Particularly a Chocolate Fish Milkshake (which they will happily make with almond milk and soy ice cream without rolling their eyes) and, of course, a supremely good cup of joe.
