Tomorrow's Treat – Bluebells Cakery, Eden Terrace
Photography by India Essuah.
We'll take any excuse to have cake for breakfast; Karla Goodwin's newest outpost happens to provide a pretty good one.
Place: Bluebells Cakery are well known across Auckland (and beyond, I'm sure) for their beautifully decorated wedding cakes, cupcakes and treats. This is Karla Goodwin's second café, her first sits in Hillsborough, and judging from the bustle that filled the cakery on its very first morning, there are more than a few people glad to have Bluebells' creations in a more central location. Some people had heard news of its opening while others had just happened by and were drawn in by the café's crisp decor, fresh flowers and colourful cabinet.
People: Karla must have had an incredibly busy year – along with the opening of this café she's also set to release her second cookbook, filled with both sweet and savoury recipes. She mentioned she'd spent half the night painting Bluebells' floors and when I visited she was on coffee duty – things aren't showing signs of slowing down.
On the menu: Bluebells will make you feel like a kid in a candy store – it's hard to know where to start. The cakes are mainly filled with classic, nostalgia-inducing flavours; you'll find (bright blue) vanilla cupcakes, strawberry cupcakes with a blood-red drizzle, banana and lemon loaves, melting moments, and jars of coconut ice lining the cabinet and counter. There are also a savoury scones, sandwiches and sausage rolls to choose from if it's not quite the right time of day for a sugar rush. Everything's also available to take away in Bluebells' hand-stamped boxes. A cake-stop wouldn't be complete without a coffee – I was pleased to find its Coffee Supreme who have this part of the deal covered.
Decor: The walls and floor are a crisp white, made brighter by the generous amount of sun that filled the shop when I visited. Bunches of bright, wild-looking flowers sit in jars a top the tables. Outside, things are just as quaint; there's a sun-drenched bench sitting next to a bike with a basket full of flowers. The decor's almost as sweet as the cakes themselves.
Go Tomorrow: For lots of cake and really good coffee. Need I say more?
