What We're Eating and Drinking: Issue 119

There’s no rest for the food-obsessed... when the dish team isn’t bringing you delicious recipes, we’re out there trawling far and wide in search of tasty fare. Below, we share our favourite go-tos.

Lately I have been hankering after loads of grunty spice and, in particular, anything with a bit of noodley dumpling action. Consequently, Ghost Street was the restaurant of choice for a recent birthday dinner. It had been a good while between visits, but I was pleased to see that the dark and moody vibe remained, service was as speedy and warm as ever and the food absolutely hit the brief. We started with Hokkaido Scallop Wontons with Sichuan Oil, Ginger and Red Vinegar — and while I had some difficulty getting the slippery little suckers to stay between my chopsticks, the taste was delicious. Next up the decadent Prawn and Sesame Toast with Garlic Butter and Sriracha Mayo, which was thick, crunchy and satisfying. To round out dinner we enjoyed the delicious Cumin Beef Biang Biang Pulled (super-stretchy) Noodles — but honestly, we could have chosen at least half a dozen more options from the extensive menu. The solution must be to head back again soon! ghoststreetakl.nz

Another winner from the Mazza-Carson family, this time a laid-back bar and bistro delivering great food, good vibes and a seriously comfortable fit-out in all my favourite colours. Modern European describes the well-crafted menu with a great, but not too large, range of dishes. Amongst others, we’ve enjoyed the silkiest Duck Liver Terrine with Cranberry and Brioche, Handmade Ricotta and Potato Dumplings, Agria Potato Croquettes with Dolce Gorgonzola and Smoked Honey and the juicest Roast Chicken with Smoked Barbecue Sauce and Crispy Shallots. If you’ve got room, finish the night with a dessert even if you have to share it. I can highly recommend the Pav with Blackberry and Gin Compote, Vanilla Bean Ice Cream and Seasonal Berries! @stmargs.krd

Why did I have so much fun eating dinner? The team at Sakebar are all about creating an authentic Japanese experience from the moment you walk through the door and I mean that literally. Each time a customer enters the restaurant, they bang their drums and greet you in Japanese. It’s undeniably a very loud space, but in a fun, bustling and energetic way! Oh and the food is sensational with sashimi, sushi, yakitori and teppan — they’ve got it all and with the opportunity to sit at the grill and watch the magic happen. @sakebarnippon

If you're craving Korean fried chicken, KooKoo is a must-visit. The relaxed, unpretentious atmosphere makes it the perfect spot for a casual meal. Try the perfectly crispy, tender, boneless chicken, and don't miss the Wang Gimmal-I (deep-fried seaweed roll stuffed with glass noodle and veges), Soy Bibim Noodle and Rose Tteokbokki. I recommend going with a group and ordering a selection to share. Add some cold beers and soju and you are in for a treat. @kookoo.nz

Hidden sourdough pizza gem, Frat’s, is high on my list of the best pizzas in town. Behind an unassuming shopfront there’s a friendly team, cosy atmosphere, and, on certain days, excellent live music. The whole menu is delicious, but I keep coming back to a Happy Hour Aperol Spritz and a gourmet Hawaiian with hot honey! @fratspizza

A multi-award-winning local institution, Cazador has survived and thrived for almost 40 years now, remaining top of its game. The food is always outstanding, particularly the house-made charcuterie and legendary-for-a-reason chocolate mousse, while venison and duck are house specialties and a must-order for mains. They‘ve made sherry cool again too, so don’t be shy and order a flight from Maitre D’ and sherry superfan Simon Benoit. The real X-factor is the warm atmosphere created by co-owners Dariush Lolaiy and Rebecca Smidt, and their fabulous (and flawless) team. Cazador is what hospitality is all about. cazador.co.nz
