The One Appliance Brand Annabel Langbein Swears By
Among the common household ingredients, you’ll find one constant fixture in Annabel Langbein’s kitchen, and that’s her trusted Kenwood appliances. We find out why this brand is so beloved by one of New Zealand’s most recognisable home cooks.
Kiwi culinary legend Annabel Langbein can pinpoint the exact moment she fell in love with all things food.
She vividly remembers the first time her mother Anne made meringues, throwing egg whites and sugar into her trusted Kenwood machine, turning them into a puff of sweetness.
In fact, just as Annabel was often there to help her mother in the kitchen, so was Kenwood, and together they discovered the endless and delicious possibilities that you can create with a range of common household ingredients. Kenwood has always been among Annabel’s staple of appliances in her kitchen, and she has continued that tradition with her own daughter Rose. You can even find a cherished family photo of Rose licking the beater of their family mixer.
"It’s Timeless - my mother had a Kenwood; my husband’s mother had a Kenwood, and these machines are still going strong."
So why is Kenwood responsible for many Kiwis’ fond memories in the kitchen? Similar to Annabel herself, Kenwood has long combined a deep love of good food with a complete understanding of how people like to cook and eat. And as a constant pioneer in British engineering since 1947, Kenwood has become an expert in food preparation products that Kiwi families love.
Kenwood’s principles of quality, innovation and design have been a trusted source of problem-solving in the kitchen that home cooks around the country have been able to rely on for decades, and even now in today’s kitchens, just as Kiwi home cooks have been able to rely on Annabel for her trusted tips and advice.
"There's such a wonderful tradition of home baking in this country, with recipes handed down generation to generation and Kenwood is entwined in this as a conduit to building happy memories."
We chatted with Annabel to find out more on her top kitchen tips using her Kenwood machine.
"Kenwood has a huge range of optional attachments that you can connect to your mixer for customisation to suit your kitchen. At home, I have the blender, food processor, food mincer and pasta maker that enables me to create anything from a quick green dressing or sausages for dinner. I often find that people have so many appliances at home that take up space in cupboards so it’s great to have a one-stop shop machine that can do it all. Investing in a piece of equipment from Kenwood certainly can save space in your kitchen, time and money in the future."
- I love using the dough hook to make my own yeast breads- it makes it very easy to maintain and very soft dough- that if you tried to knead by hand would get messy.
- Being able to heat the bowl, means that it’s so easy to cream the butter and sugar together- it gets really fluffy and light so quickly.
- Having two bowl sizes means I can swap bowls when I am making something that has whipped egg whites and say whipped cream.
- The timer on the mixer means I can put the machine on- to knead or to whisk etc and walk away, I don’t have to stand over it, it stops by itself when the time is up.
- The different options of speed, (temperature on my machine), and time, mean it's readily customised to whatever recipe you are making.
"It will be a machine that sits on your bench (not in the cupboard) and gets used every day- whether for baking, or with the blender attachment to make mayonnaise, smoothies and emulsified sauces, or with the food processor attachment for whizzing up herbs, chopping nuts or grating vegetables, or the pasta attachment to make your own pasta, or the grinder to make mince or sausages or bliss balls."
Reflecting on her childhood memories with her mother in their kitchen, it’s no surprise Annabel became a proud brand ambassador for Kenwood earlier this year. The no-nonsense, ever-trusted products that never let you down have been a staple in her kitchen as long as she can remember.
"Everything about the Kenwood Mixer feels well made. Their durability and functionality really stands out. The motor is powerful, and they never seem to break down. Plus, you can get all these useful attachments."
