Foodie's favourite: Amy's Secret Kitchen

Baking extraordinaire Amy Todd of Amy's Secret Kitchen, dishes on her favourite local baking blogs.

In today’s world, we are incredibly fortunate that we have access to the likes of Instagram, YouTube, Pinterest and blogs with thousands of ideas and new tips and tricks for baking and decorating cakes and cupcakes.

My main source of inspiration is colour and texture used in food-to-art pieces. This underpins the artistry in my decoration and I have taught myself many different icing techniques through simple YouTube tutorials.

Learning the art of balance, colour and proportion is very important in cake decorating. Once you've learned key techniques, you can then inspire yourself as you keep practicing. You will then grow your own sense of style.

Here are four people that I adore for their work:

1. Maggie from Florabunda & Cake, Auckland

Maggie is incredibly artistic with her edible sugar flowers which she makes by hand with gum paste.

2. Cliff from Cakes by Cliff, Sydney

Cliff has an eye for tall, architectural style cakes with a perfect balance of colour and texture. He is well-known for is his insane upside-down drizzle and chocolatier sails.

3. Alita and Matthew from Tome, Sunshine Coast

This duo are nailing it with their incredible baking and photography work, it is a mixture of beauty and decadent looking cakes. Their baking is famous for their use of gooey caramel drizzles, fresh flowers and clusters of brittle.

4. Amelia from Melie’s Kitchen, Auckland

Amelia has a palette for the most mouth-watering flavours and her style is traditional with a modern twist.
