Tomorrow's Brunch - Bestie, Auckland
What was once a wee coffee cart at the back of St Kevin's Arcade is now a beautifully designed cafe with a simple and delicious menu.
After chatting to Bestie's owners, Emma Lyell and Tane Williams, when the cafe was still operating as a coffee cart, their enthusiasm gave away their new venture was going to be something pretty special. Emma brings ten years of hospitality experience, including time at neighbours Coco's Cantina, while Tane came up with the colour scheme and design of Bestie, including its eye-catching logo. The gorgeous eatery does its picturesque location justice – if you've yet to drink coffee under the arcade's high windows, you're missing out on one of the best inner-city views.
Tane and Emma have kept the menu simple – we visited for breakfast and tried three of their sweeter options. The muesli came in a generous portion with coconut yoghurt and delicious fruit piled on top. We couldn't go past their olive oil waffles topped with poached fruit and ricotta cream. Even though it was barely 8am, we added a portion of their ricotta doughnuts to our order and when the tiny, sugar-coated clouds arrived, we were very happy we did.
There are plenty of savoury options available too – spiced lentils with chopped boiled eggs and flatbread appear on their breakfast menu and there are light salads and tasty sandwich options for lunch. Their cabinet is also filled with fresh baking – a perfect accompaniment to a cup of the rich Eighthirty coffee they serve. Emma says those visiting Bestie can expect to find "good vibes and great views". We'd have to agree.
