Tomorrow's Treat – Canelé, La Voie Française
Photography by India Essuah.
This week's sweet delight is a tiny French treat to be enjoyed any time of day.
La Voie Française is temptingly close to my house and with its fresh bread, sandwiches and croissants it’s really the best neighbour I could ask for. While I often stop by for a baguette on the way to the bus, it wasn’t until I visited with our Deputy Editor Alice Galletly that I discovered the tiny, sweet canelés in a pile on the counter.
They have a thick, caramel crust (the darker the better, in my opinion) but are soft and custardy on the inside. Wikipedia assures me canelés “can be consumed for breakfast, for snacks and as a dessert” and these just so happen to be my three favourite ‘mealtimes'.
While ours are usually accompanied by a cup of coffee (La Voie Français have just started serving Kokako), apparently they pair beautifully with both tea as well as all types of wine. They might come across as the most unassuming of the treats on offer at La Voie Francais – you'll find them sitting to the far right of the counter
